Lap class Concrete strength

Class A 1.0 × ld — shorter laps. Use only when both are true on the splice plane: ① no more than 50% of bars are spliced at the same location, and ② bar-to-bar clear spacing ≥ 2 db with cover ≥ db. Less steel ordered when it qualifies.

Class B 1.3 × ld — the conservative default. Use when the Class A conditions aren't both met, or when you're not sure. ACI 318 §25.5 makes this the catch-all. Adds about 30% more lap LF vs Class A.

ld = development length, varies by bar size + concrete strength. ConCal computes the actual inches in the table below for the selected class.
